About
I grew up in Massachusetts and went to college at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. I majored in astronomy and graduated in 1966. From there I went to graduate school at the University of California in Berkeley. I received my Ph.D. in 1977, after a short stint as the director of the planetarium at Chabot College, in Hayward, CA. I have been a professor of physics and astronomy and director of Ritter Planetarium at the University of Toledo since 1979. In late 2005 I became the Director of UT's Master of Liberal Studies Program, and relinquished my position as planetarium director. I enjoy painting watercolor, building cabinets and furniture, gardening, and raising chickens and other beasts with my wife. I have two children from a previous marriage; one graduated from the University of Washington in drama and the other from the University of California at Santa Cruz in art history. The dramatist is now on a Fullbright Scholarship studying indiginous theater in sub-Saharan Africa, and the art historian is a district manager for Habitat for Humanity.
